TSA pre-check ($85) or global access ($100)
Website for Pre-check application:

If you live in the LA area, allow at least 6 months to get an appt. your other options are to make an appt outside the LA area. We live in LA and we were able to get an appointment in Newark while we were there on a visit.
If you travel internationally, you should consider global entry, which includes TSA pre-check. This is used when re-entering the U.S. You process through an expedited line.
Global Entry Website:

Even w/ pre-check, many airports still don't have enough TSA lines to process everyone through security. Just went through security at LAX and had to remove the laptop from the bag. Also had to show boarding pass prior to security x-ray in order to verify eligibility. Need to be flexible when traveling.
